Some older and ancient members may remember Geoffrey Pallett , who was for many years Editor of Coastguard Magazine in its old form when published by the D O T ; although now retired Jeffrey has recently undergone triple bypass surgery on his heart, is doing well , in fine form, although he has to take it easy for a bit!

Wreck Tokens

Nov
19

Wreck tokens Apart from the Officers in charge of Coastguard stations, all other coastguards were volunteers and unpaid as is the case today. However when they were called out and attended or assisted in a shipping casualty such as a shipwreck, they received a token payment. It is stated that this was introduced to prevent pilfering from any cargo that was washed up from the shipwreck, this however is not established and we should regard it as payment for services rendered.

Coastguards now able to fly the flag

VOLUNTEERS working for the HM Coastguard Plymouth are now really flying the flag for the organisation – after buying a new standard.

The Turnchapel-based organisation bought the bright blue flag after civic figures expressed their shock that they didn't have one.

Councillor Pauline Murphy, the former Lady Mayoress of Plymouth, was speaking to members of the coastguard team in the summer when she was told they didn't have one to parade.
