Captain Fremantle (1824)

Extract from the Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee of Management of the "National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck" of 10th July 1824:-
The Committee adverting to the Letter from Captain Freemantle R. N. dated Lymington 2nd of April (and also to the Letter of His Royal Highness the Duke of Clarence dated the 11th of April) stating the manner in which Capt. F_ had acted in endeavouring to save the Lives of the Crew of a Swedish Brig which was wrecked near Christchurch on the 8th of March:-
Resolved -
That the Committee being deisrous of recording and manifesting their sense of the gallant and highly meritorious conduct of Capt. Freemantle unanimously vote
That the Gold Medallion be presented to that Gentleman as soon as the same can be prepared - and that the Secy. Was desired toc ommunicate this Resolution to Captain Freemantle.

Note:  Although the original Minutes refer to Captain Freemantle, the correct spelling of his name is Fremantle.  In 1829, in command of HMS Challenger, he took possession of Western Australia, and the port of Fremantle was named after him.
