KENT AND EAST SUSSEX COASTGUARDS TO RECEIVE LONG SERVICE AWARDS AND CHIEF COASTGUARDS COMMENDATION

At an Awards evening this Friday (15th) in Hastings, Bud White, Station Officer, Hastings Coastguard Rescue Team, and Dick Rowsell, Station Officer, Bexhill Coastguard Rescue Team, will be receiving their 40 year Long Service bar from the Chief Coastguard Rod Johnson.

East Kent Sector Manager Andy Roberts is being awarded a Chief Coastguard Commendation.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held at Azur, Marina, St. Leonards-on-Sea TN38 0BU commencing at 19.30.

The Queens representative in East Sussex, The Lord Lieutenant, Peter Field; Vice Admiral Sir Alan Massey KCB, CBE, Chief Executive Officer of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and the Mayors of both Bexhill and Hastings will also be in attendance.

Andy Roberts joined HM Coastguard at Dover in 1983, and since then his service has been entirely in East Kent. He was appointed as Sector Manager in 1997, and from that point much of his diligence and hard work has been directed towards fostering excellence within the Auxiliary Coastguard, now the Coastguard Rescue Service.

His energy and enthusiasm for his work has resulted in the forging of strong links with other emergency services and partner organisations. Andy was a key player in Operation Flashlight, the Coastguard response to the risks posed by the Millennium celebrations, and devised a safe system for the emergency services to operate on the dangerous terrain of South Foreland.

Andy has also devoted much of his time to promoting Coastguard work with young people, to develop them into good citizens.
