Lym IRT was formed 15 years ago, when a gap in the coast needed plugging.

Extract from the Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee of Management of the "National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck" of 10th July 1824:-
The Committee adverting to the Letter from Captain Freemantle R. N. dated Lymington 2nd of April (and also to the Letter of His Royal Highness the Duke of Clarence dated the 11th of April) stating the manner in which Capt. F_ had acted in endeavouring to save the Lives of the Crew of a Swedish Brig which was wrecked near Christchurch on the 8th of March:-
